Community Approaches to Total Sanitation CATS

A person in colourful clothing bends down to pour water from a plastic container over their hands on a dusty path

Overview

CATS encompasses a wide variety of community-led sanitation programs with the aim to end open defecation through community action and awareness raising.

CATS activities involve community-led behavior change programs using triggering workshops, participatory mapping, the construction of latrines and hand-washing facilities. The aim is to increase community members’ self-respect and pride in the community, as well as shame and disgust about open defecation, in order to bring about community-led collective action.
